Book or Website for Libbey

I know there's alot of good resources for Libbey Glass for the Brilliant Cut period and even working through their 1970s catalogs via a tip to Libbey's website that someone here posted. But I'm wondering if there's a good website or book that lists all of Libbey/Rock Sharpe's post 1980s patterns or one that lists all the mold pressed glass that were the drinkware staple of American kitchens? I've found Replacements to be be good, but I know of at least 3 patterns that are obvious Libbey that aren't listed there. Thanks!

GCB2 Heisey Empress Question-Posibble Caption Error

I picked up a pair of Heisey Empress C-sticks in Sahara. When I refereneced the GCB2 page 124, the picture on the left shows the same etch as the ones I that I have acquired. The caption states that it is the empress etch. However, when I went to the gallery to make sure that was what the etch on my sticks were, they did not match up with the gallery. Further searching I was able to determine that the etch I have and the etch in the book pics is old colony. Had me scratching my head for a while until I figured it all out.

Reference works for Depression era glass

We just received Monograph No. 61. Dunbar Glassware in the 1931 Catalog with a short history. The West Virginia Museum of American Glass, Ltd. with research and text by Dean Six. This is a GREAT reference for Dunbar glass being made at that time.

We were at the WVMAG about a month ago and overlooked the monograph, although we spent some time looking through their pile of publications; an oversight on our part, I'm sure. We became acutely aware of the publication when Allison F identified our #1135 jug - and our #1138 jug had been identified a short while back.

NOW A PLEA: Would it be too much work to put together a synthesized reference section (bibliography) for all U.S. glass manufactures operating during the Depression? Books and monographs are listed on this forum in various topics under books, or monographs, but to me the list seems somewhat hit and miss. I realize that Florence, Mauzy, etc. have bibliographies, but there is no indication of how comprehensive the listed references are.

One company that we want a good reference for is Hazel-Atlas. We have Florence's HA book, but we have a number of pieces that aren't shown there. Is there a more comprehensive reference that we aren't aware of, or, perhaps, a group of several books, catalogs (that are available) , etc. that suffice? Just a question that we don't necessarily expect an answer to. Such a question can be asked about a number of glass companies.

In short, what are the best references for the various companies?

Thumbnails are back!

If you upload images to the Forums, they will appear as thumbnails again. The size limit per post remains at 350kilobytes, so you will still need to compress your image files. This seems to have helped to alleviate the traffic jams.

NEW LIMITS ON IMAGE SIZE/POST

We have placed a 350KB limit on images allowed per post in an effort to speed up board access--both creating posts and viewing posts. 350Kilobytes is far more space than most of you use when uploading images to a single post. It is far less than some people use. You will get a warning message when you've exceeded the limit.

Here's how it works:

* You can upload one or more images in a single post BUT the total size of all the images cannot exceed 350KB. Example: upload 2 photos into a single post, one is 140Kb, the other 210Kb.

* The software keeps track of the size of the images, as you upload and click Add Image. When you start, it says Used 0bytes of your 350K global upload quota (Max. single file size: 350K)

* If you try to upload more than 350Kb, you will get this message: Error This file was too big to upload. The post will not accept the image.

How do you know what size your image file is? You can let the software count for you as you upload--a trial and error method that works just fine. Or you can look on the Details list of the jpg files you want to load. If they're too big, load them into your photo editing program and resize and/or compress them to 350Kb or less and save them.

This limit may be too generous or not generous enough. We will have to see how it helps. I'm hoping we can go back to the thumbnail views with this limit.

FYI, the previous limit was 8 Megabytes/post--a huge amount.

Thumbnails Removed;

The photo thumbnails that have displayed on photos posted to the Forums have been changed to links with photo name and size of file. We have had to make this change to expedite access to the Forums. The thumbnail algorithm was accepting any size image and displaying it first full size and then shrinking. Huge images greater than 1200-1600 pixels along on side were taking huge amounts of bandwidth in being displayed, especially when one or more members were trying to view these huge pictures. We have asked Invision for alternatives.

One alternative that has been mentioned repeatedly is for members to set their image size on their cameras to around 1000; 1200-1600 is acceptable. Older cameras did not give images bigger than 1600; newer cameras go above 3200 pixels.

Followup: We have followed a suggestion from Invision technical support to limit the size of uploaded files. When we are sure this helps the access problem, we will reinstate the thumbnails. In addition to uploading smaller files, members using some of the newer cameras may need to use jpg compression in a photo editing program.

=======================================

At one time or another, we've all been forced to upgrade our security program, our browser, our mail program, maybe even our marriages ( in case you weren't paying attention!). It's hard. As the saying goes, everything that can go wrong will (my paraphrase). We've sworn at our computers, threatened them with mayhem, cried, prayed, bribed--whatever--to please come back and play nice the way they used to.

We all have met the beast in these boxes. Yet we buy an upgrade, install according to instructions, and expect that all will be hunky-dorey. Not. Not ever. But we hope. We believe.

Well, software developers don't know everything, especially about their potential customers, i.e., you and me. They try to cover and test the most generic applications. In general, they do a great job. Invision did a great job, but they didn't know us the way Jo and James and the rest of us (the developers call us "users") do.

Bit by byte, label by link, things are smoothing out as we learn what those developers designed. We all know it takes patience to upgrade anything, and maybe some cussing and tears. Then comes the learning curve to absorb what those developers put in the upgrade and didn't tell us about. Maybe they didn't think it mattered. Who knows?

Day by day it's getting better, because you believed in the project to begin with and because Jo and James kept going, though it must have seemed like everything was tumbling on their heads.

So, thank you, Jo and James, for the special he-double-toothpicks you elected to go through. Heads and shoulders may ache, but it is worth it! To us. And to all who believe in digital magic.

Tell Me Your Problems ;-)

Hi Everyone,

I realize there are a number of issues that have appeared after the recent server migration and interface upgrade. If you are having problems other than the ones listed here, or if you have additional information that might help us solve these, please respond.

Currently I am working on these two issues in this order of priority:

1) People are unable to stay logged into the server once they enter their name and password. If any of you know how to check to see if the website is actually setting cookies on your machine, please check and get back to me here with the cookie information. The cookie name should be: chataboutdg_forums

2) The gallery link has vanished. This is due to the fact that the Invision people upgraded with board's template/skin without any analysis of the consequences. The new version of IP.Board (version 3) uses a nice, robust, well written, innovative ... and more complex (LOL) method to create application links. I am going to hard-code one tonight that will take everyone to the gallery and work on creating a proper one in due time that will survive future upgrades.

-- This new template is also the reason the forums look so much different. If you find that a feature you are use to seeing is missing ... post that here as well.

thanks!

Me again, with the new skin, our category name, "Elegant and Everyday Glass Forum" was repeated twice across the header causing some confusion for me as well as others. The first time, it is really for the Home page and the second time it is for the main forum where we discuss glass topics. I changed the name of the second one to Glass Topics so everyone will eventually know which one to click on in the hiearchy.

When I renamed the category, I decided that our "Off Topic" discussion should really go in the "Welcome" area. I hope that makes sense to the rest of you. If not, remember I try to be a good listener and consensus builder.

My son has steadfastly refused to tell me how much the server space costs him that he donates to this forum and the gallery. My daughter-in-law always simply says, it's your annual birthday and Christmas present.

For the last few months James has been frustrated with the amount of bandwidth required to do backups on the gallery. He was initially even frustrated with completing the backups but for the last 2 months we have had complete back ups monthly. The file is getting so huge, the backups take hours and evidently that is adding some additional cost to maintaining the site. He called me today to say that in a few months he will be moving the site to another server which has better terms for both server space and back ups.

In the interim, I am going to do what I have never done before. If any of you enjoy the site and think it is worth something to you personally to keep it up, please put a donation in my son's Paypal account. His account is under the email address James@thehunterfamily.com

I sincerely hope this does not become something like the PBS annual pledge drive. If the server move lowers some of the costs, this should be a one time deal.

Westmoreland's Della Robbia

Hi everyone, I'm interested in getting opinions. Please chime in. I have been collecting Della Robbia for about 20 years and in that time, the best source of info I've found is probably Lorraine Kovar's Westmoreland books. Problem is, at the time she wrote those books, there wasn't that much known about the pattern. In the last 20 years, I have accumulated quite a collection, and many of my pieces have not been documented. I have pieces in very strange finishes or glass colors. So, I went to the Shiffer Book people about 3 or 4 years ago and talked to them about writing a book solely on Della Robbia. They turned me down flat saying that a book on one small pattern wouldn't do anyone any good. No one would want it. What do you all think? If you could have access to a more definitive collection of photos of more than 30 variations of this pattern, would you be interested and do you think anyone else would be? I'm still toying with the idea and might need some inspiration. Thanks.

On January 4, 2004, Chataboutdg aka Elegant and Everyday Glass Forum went live online after months of discussion about how to continue the interest and community created by Annie Shatrau at DGSO (Depression Glass Shopping Online). From its founding membership of 6 people (Jo Davis, myself, Kathy McCarney, Dean Lowry, Rick Hirte and David McInturff) it has grown to 1564 members and some 15,000 Gallery images. We have all learned so much from each other by sharing our knowledge, experience and glass. In the process, I think we have contributed to the preservation of the wonderful glass made by American and foreign manufacturers of the 1920s-50s, and even into the present.

Let's all give ourselves a virtual pat on the back. Let's thank each other for volunteering our time and our glass. And, most of all, let's thank Jo Davis and her son James for keeping this website alive.

Help Us Spread The Word

I want to ask each of you who sell on eBay or other on line sites to consider using a link to our gallery in your auctions. Either link to your actual piece in the gallery or link to another piece in the same pattern.

I am hoping a link to our gallery entry will help you authenticate your item if needed. I know it will send a little more traffic to our gallery.

Additional gallery traffic sometimes creates new members for the forum and those new members may have unusual pieces we would all like to see and add to the gallery.

Our forum needs continued growth to remain interesting. Our gallery needs lots of traffic to remain self supporting from our Google ads.

I know exclusive type knowledge helps some of us find bargains at auctions, but I think most of those bargains will still be out there despite increased traffic to the gallery because there will always be people cleaning out their attics who are new to the trade.

I also know that the more identification available on a glass company, the more likely that that company's products will increase in value. Through the years, every time a new glass book was published, the prices of the glass in the book got a significant bump. In other words, when customers know what they are looking for, the more likely it will be that several people are looking for the same item. Several bidders on an item mean a better price for an item.

I want glass prices to return to the levels they were at when I started collecting. It may mean I won't get the bargains I am getting now, but it will also mean, our collections will be an investment instead of a loss.

I also want glass collecting to flourish because I want the beautiful glass made by American craftsmen to be cherished and preserved. For that to happen, the public has to think that American glass has value.

A Butler Brothers Catalog Collection Volume 1

In our continued efforts to further individual study and research relating to glassware and pottery Old Line publishing has released the first book in a seven volume set which includes original catalog reprints from the famed Butler Brothers Wholesale Company.

In the latter part of the 1800s, three brothers, Edward, George and Charles Butler, would start a business venture that would eventually become one of the greatest business success stories in American history. In the early 1870s, Edward was selling merchandise as a traveling salesman in the New England area. However, after five years of being on the road, Edward felt that there had to be a better way to sell his merchandise. So together, the three brothers came up with the idea to sell wholesale merchandise to retail stores through the mail and let the catalogs do the traveling. Butler Brothers, as they would name their company, opened their first warehouse in Boston in 1877 with the simple premise of selling bundled sets of merchandise for either five or ten cents and instructing the retail merchants on how to sell the merchandise at a profit. This system would eventually turn into the 5 & 10 stores or the five and dime stores.

The demand for their business was so immediate and overwhelming that they were forced to move their business to larger quarters four times within two years. Finally, in June of 1879, the brothers determined they needed to move their business to a new central location which would be more suitable to serving the needs of an ever growing and changing nation; Chicago. Again, the business grew so rapidly that they decided to open another warehouse in New York in 1880. Soon to follow were warehouses in St. Louis (1898), Minneapolis (1907), Dallas (1911), Baltimore (1930), and San Francisco (1932). They also had over a dozen sample houses located in cities throughout the United States. By 1932, the Butler Brothers Company owned over 5,000,000 sq. ft. of warehouse space around the country and serviced thousands of retail merchants. Simply put, they were the kings of the wholesale market.
The incredible success of their business was brought about by two primary factors. These included the ability to market their products through their fantastic catalog sales system and their ability to instruct the retailer on how to sell more merchandise and maximize profitability. Every issue of their catalog, which was called “Our Drummer”, had specials and incentives, along with instructions, that if used properly would wield ultimate profitability for the retailer.

The decline of Butler Brothers was brought on by the Great Depression and as with many companies Butler Brothers was never able to fully regain its financial composure. In the late 1920s, Butler Brothers entered the retail market by opening a series of department stores known as Ben Franklin Variety Stores. While many of these stores still exist today, Butler Brothers sold their interest in the company in 1959.

The catalogs featured in this book ended sometime around 1950 as Butler Brothers continued to falter financially. While the creation of these catalogs did eventually come to end they have turned out to be a great asset to the researcher and collector. Each catalog has become a small time capsule and includes all that was being manufactured and sold at that given point in time from the 1870s through the 1940s.

This volume contains the glass and pottery sections from four early catalogs; November 1896, Spring and Summer 1898, Spring 1903, and Spring 1906.

To order this catalog or to view other catalogs from Old Line Publishing, simply got to www.oldlinepublishingllc.com.

Also, the color of my Hocking 06 Spiral Jug is "Golden Luster." The illustrations of Indiana Glass Line 5 also indicates it was available in the mid 1920s. There are illustrations of Hocking's flower sets.

There is a lot of information packed into a small volume thanks to Craig Schenning.

Jim R

Co-operative Flint Glass Book

The Co-operative Flint Glass Co. of Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, 1879-1934. This is an original work published in association with the Museum of American Glass in West Virginia. Drawing on many years of research by the authors, it tells the story of this important but often overlooked glass manufacturer, whose production spanned the years from early American pattern glass to elegant glass of the 1920s. Hundreds of patterns and individual items are identified, many of them for the first time. Fully illustrated with high quality photographs, catalog reprints, and trade journal advertisements, the volume is divided into two parts. The first is arranged by pattern, conveniently sorted by design elements, and the second half is arranged by shape, making it easy to find candlesticks, creams and sugars, vases, decanters, tumblers, and much more. In addition to the history of Co-op Flint, this book also includes information about the later life of the molds with examples of pieces made in these molds by the Phoenix Glass Company and John E. Kemple Glassworks, among others. Current values are included. Written by E. Earl Autenreith and JoAnne S. Autenreith, with photographs by David Bentley. 376 pages, including bibliography and index, with over 500 illustrations, including many in full color. 8 1/2" x 11". ISBN 0-9793772-7-3. Available for $39.95 for non-members, $35.95 for members of MAGWV at the $35.00 level or above.
