"These items, officially known as Imperial's No. 37 10 1/2" vase and No. 83 9 1/2" vase in satin-finished Antique Blue cased with opal glass, take their informal name after Edith Gaines, a glass enthusiast from New York who visited Imperial several times in 1964-65. Gaines was associate editor of The Magazine ANTIQUES, and she also published a well-illustrated series of articles on American glass for the popular Woman's Day magazine in the early 1960s.
"During her visits to Imperial, Gaines spent many hours in the plant observing various aspects of the glassmaking process and asking many questions of both workers and management. Workers in Hot Metal took quite a liking to her, calling her "Gaffer Gaines" and making her an honorary member of AFGWU Local Union No. 13."
