Fostoria Glass Company History
Fostoria began production in Fostoria, Ohio in 1887 but moved to Moundsville W. V. when the natural gas in Ohio became depleted.

Early on Fostoria did pressed ware with an emphasis on oil lamps. Hundreds of "Gone With The Wind" type lamp patterns were made in this period. In the teens they started making more and more glassware for home use and started shifting their production to this type of glass as oil lamps became a thing of the past.

Fostoria started producing colored wares in 1924 and in 1925 they were the first company to produce a complete dinner set in colored glass.

During this era, they often advertised their wares using the phrase "Fostoria, the crystal for America". Those advertising campaigns were so successful that even today, some people call all crystal dinnerware Fostoria regardless of the maker.

Fostoria remained in business until 1982 but changing American tastes and lifestyles finally forced them to sell their assets to Lancaster Colony. Lancaster Colony produced a few Fostoria patterns (Virginia, Transition, Heritage, Kimberley, Kimberley Gold, Kimberley Platinum, Monarch and York) until 1986 when all Fostoria production ceased.

Fostoria has been well documented in glass reference books. Suggested references are:
