Hocking Glass Co. was founded in 1905 when investors bought facilities of the Lancaster Carbon Co. Hocking's main plant was nicknamed the "Black Cat". It burned in 1924. At that time, they purchased the Lancaster Glass Co. and the Standard Glass Co. to take over production while a new plant was built. Lancaster and Standard continued to operate as separate entities until December of 1937 when Hocking Glass Co. and their neighbor, Anchor Cap & Closure Co., merged to form Anchor Hocking Glass Co., which is still in business today under that name. Anchor Hocking Specialty Glass is a separate division, that wasn't purchased until 1970. That company was formerly Phoenix Glass Co.
