King Glass Company History
King Glass Company History |
Maps of the Pittsburgh South Side dating to the 1860s indicate that there was a glass factory just east of 18th Street, which was operated by the firm of McKee and Brothers. According to Glass: Shattering Notions, the exhibit catalogue for the similarly-named exhibit at the Heinz History Center, "The name McKee has meant glass in Western Pennsylvania since the 1850s." Founded in 1850 by Frank and James McKee, the company became one of the nation's largest producers of flint (or leaded) glass. The McKees operated the plant until 1888, when H. Sellers McKee built a new facility in Jeanette, which was named after his wife. The 18th Street plant was bought by the King Glass Company, which, the Shattering Notions catalog reports, manufactured crystal-ware, table- and bar-ware, candy and other jars, as well as colored flint glass. Later the plant was acquired by the United States Glass Company, which operated several Pittsburgh facilities until after the Great Depression.
