Company History
In November 1929 the brothers Alexander and Dixon Sloan restarted the former Utility Glass Works factory in Lonaconing, Maryland, which had closed several months earlier. The two brothers named the glass manufacturing business Sloan Bros and the associated decorating company was called the Lonaconing Cut Glass Company. The two brothers and their father, Matthew, had operated the Potomac Glass Company in Cumberland, Maryland until April 6, 1929 when it was destroyed by fire.

Sloan Bros produced a wide variety of crystal and colored glassware sold by the likes of Gimbels of New York, the Montgomery-Wards and Sears department stores and many of the five and dime stores of the day. Indications are they continued some of the product lines of the Utility Glass Works. The number of employees at the two businesses was about 350.

To date no catalogs have been located; but a dozen or more advertisements have been found in addition to several patents and shards from the factory’s dump that help identify a few of the product lines.

The life of the Sloan business was cut short on March 6, 1932, again by a fire, after a mere 28 months of manufacture. Several years later the two brothers started a decorating company in Cumberland, Maryland, the Sloan Glass Company. Dixon Sloan eventually was employed by the Maryland Glass Company, also in Cumberland, Maryland.
