Maryland Glass Etching Works Table Set--Covered Butter w/ Etch #1142
This butterr is part of a table set that included sugar, creamer, button and spooner. The Gallery has examples of all but the spooner. This etching technique is known as fume etching.
The bottom of the butter has a T inside an inverted triangle inside a diamond pressed into the base pattern. The T stands for George Truog who was the owner of Maryland Glass Etching Works. His company bought blanks from glass manufacturers and etched them with various designs. The trademark only exists on certain table sets that were made expressly for him. Who pressed this pattern is unknown; Truog probably owned the molds.
The image at the upper right shows the location and magnification of a signature G T, which, when present, was hidden in the design.
