Company History
Sinclaire (H. P.) & Company, Corning, New York (1904-1928).

Harry P. Sinclaire, Jr., began his career in 1883 working for the Hawkes Rich Cut Glass Works as a bookkeeper, where he had the opportunity to learn all aspects of the cut glass business. He eventually became a part owner of the Hawkes company. His preference for engravings over cuttings, coupled with business disagreements with Hawkes, led to his resignation in 1904 and the establishment of his own firm, using blanks from Dorflinger & Sons and others. In the 1920s, after Dorflinger’s closing, Sinclaire began blowing most of their own blanks in a factory located in Bath, New York, moving this operation in 1925 to Dunkirk, New York. However, with Sinclaire’s unexpected death in June 1927, this factory was closed immediately and the engraving facility in Corning only continued to operate for about a year, using up remaining stock.

Pieces may be found marked with an “S†in a wreath or with the block-printed signature, “Sinclaire.†-- From The Glass Candlestick Book, volume 3, by Tom Felt, Richard & Elaine Stoer. Reprinted with permission.
