4" tall, 4-1/8" diameter base;
Frosted top. From Innskeep collection--only known example.
The color is “canary,†the name Utility gave it; it is a bright Vaseline. While going through the Innskeep collection, we discovered a stack of twelve plates still in their original packing wrapped with string. Canary was stamped on the packing as the color and we removed just enough of the packing to ascertain the color. The custard like color is the result of the top being dipped in acid. Quite a bit of this treatment was used, especially on lamp bases.
The base was formed by adding molten glass to the bottom of the stem and using a tool to form the base while the blowpipe was rotated. The process is fairly obvious when looking at a base and seeing the concentric circles going around the center. To the best of my knowledge, a pontil mark will not be found on any Utility product.
