McKee #1776 Colonial Jadite Rose Jar
10" tall vase. Shown in 1929 catalog. According to Tom Felt of the Museum of American Glass in West Virginia, "It's one of the longest-lived patterns that I'm familiar with. It was originally introduced by the Riverside Glass Company in 1906 as their Kanawha pattern. Unfortunately Riverside joined the National Glass Company combine and by 1907 had been closed, with the moulds somehow coming into the possession of the Tygart Valley Glass Company. MAGWV has a reprint of a ca. 1908 catalog from that company with 14 pages of the No. 593 Kanawha pattern. (These early pieces, of course, would be in crystal only.) Through some other as yet unknown occurrence, the pattern was announced in 1915 by McKee as their "new" Pres-Cut No. 75 Colonial line, later continued as No. 1776. It wasn't until 1956, after McKee became a division of the Thatcher Glass Company, that Smith acquired the moulds and incorporated it into their Heritage line, later expanded to become a line of its own (Old Dominion, eventually renamed as just Dominion). Smith made the pattern extensively in milk glass (though McKee under Thatcher could have done this color as well), plus many other colors, with production continuing from 1956 until sometime after 2006. Some of the Smith production was exclusively for Martha Stewart, including pieces in green milk glass. This has got to be one of the most complicated patterns in glass history!"
