Maryland Glass Co. Center Handle Server w/ Unknown Etch
The plate is 10" across and stands 5-1/2" tall. Base of the collar is 3". The collar rises 1/4" from the plate. The collar has 12 distinct panels. The handle is classified here as spade-shaped. These measurements differ from the New Martinsville CHS that was originally considered as ID.
According to member JayGeorge, an expert on Maryland Glass, "Dale Murschell’s 2nd edition of his...book, Glass of Cumberland & Lonaconing Maryland, has a picture of a shard of [this] handle on page 139 recovered from the factory dump. Page 128 has a picture of a shard with the same etching I believe is on [this] CHS. The shard, although small, has the detail highlighted and is quite clear. Also on the same page is a Maryland candy pictured with the same etch; beside it is an insert of a portion of the candy with the location of the shard highlighted.
Other examples exist locally of [this] CHS...with other Maryland etches.
But, no catalogue pages have been found to identify it as Maryland nor has a shard been found with an enough of the plate attached to handle to aid in the identification (that I’m aware of).
I’m inclined to think it is a Maryland piece, but the evidence may not be strong enough for some."
