Sunkist Bowl
Sunkist Bowl

Sunkist Bowl
Florence shows this bowl in his 6th Ed. "Kitchen Glassware of the Depression Years 2001" without any indication as to manufacturer.

This same author attributes the Sunkist reamers to McKee ... except in his 5th Ed. where he says "according to records just uncovered at the Fenton factory, the very first Sunkist reamers were made by Indiana Glass Company.

Barbara Mauzy, on the other hand, says "Bowl: unknown manufacturer." Sunkist is advertised on a fruit bowl that is 12" in diameter and 7" high.

Rosemary Treitsch provided thie following insight for this listing:

Stout's " Complete Book of McKee Glass", on page 22 describes how McKee had color in their factories well before the rest of the depression era companies. While color hits most of the factories in the mid 1920's just about the time that mechanization reaches them, McKee was producing pink and others as early as 1904. She also mentions the Sunkist reamers on that page, saying you could buy them in addition to getting one as a premium.

On page 107, there's a #1776 fruit bowl that's similar in shape to the the Sunkist bowl as well as many similar punch/fruit/EGG bowls in heavy pressed patterns. ( McKee marketed these as 'Bowls for fruit, lemons, eggs,' etc. and even advertised reamers along with them in their catalog. It would be logical for McKee to offer a Sunkist bowl along with their Sunkist reamers.)

They must have been difficult to produce. Most people have never seen one that had perfectly clean lines on all the ridges, but thankfully enough survived that we at least have some examples of this great bowl.

New photos 6/26/2009.

New photo of base 4/2010: Not all Sunkist bowls had Sunkist molded into the foot. The bowl on the right has the pattern all around the foot.

2010 Update: The Kirkland Museum has recently purchased a Sunkist bowl in black glass.
