Most frequently this colored material would have been colored sand or water (that water was used is attested to by the fact that these candle lamps are often slightly cloudly inside). The lamp is in two pieces.The patent application also makes a point of stating that the apron on the stopper will have the effect of absorbing color rays, either from the colored material in the receptacle or from the candle light or from other sources."
The lamp was named "Innovation" by researchers.

This piece is marked underneath the candle cup section where the piece pinches in before going down to the stopper.
