Paden City #540 Leeuwen Etch
Paden City #540 Leeuwen Etch |
This etch was named Leeuwen, which is the Dutch word for Lion. An old world name was chosen by Bill Walker in 1999, because of the old world flavor of this elaborate etch.
Top 3-Part Image, courtesy of Bill & Sandy Walker: In the largest form (shown on the top left), Leeuwen contains the 2 lions for which it is named, an urn filled with over-sized blossoms, and a great deal of delicate flora.
The medium version (shown lower right), contains the same lions, urn (with or without flowers), and a smaller amount of flora. What's interesting about this size of the etching it that it also contains 2 small eagle-like birds beneath the lions. We've never seen these birds incorporated in the largest example of the etching.
The smallest version (shown in the upper right on the foot of a PC #890 3-lite candlestick) again has just the lions, urn, no flowers, and only a little flora.
This same kind of variation is quite common with elaborate etches. Paden City's Peacock and Rose is another example--there are several variations based on the size of the item being etched.
