L. E. Smith # 65 Powder Box
"This black powder box can be confirmed as Smith's no. 65 Hobnail pattern. Even though it may appear to vary from the catalog page reprinted by Weatherman, the flat medallion on the lid is distinctive. It was made in black (or crystal with a black top) circa 1932-1939 and was a very popular seller, which probably explains the existence of more than one mold for the piece. It was also made in green, rose, and white (milk glass)." --Tom Felt

Looks similar to an L. E. Smith powder box shown on page 325 of "Colored Glass of the Depression Era, Book 2" by Hazel Marie Weatherman in a 1932 7-piece dresser set ad and named "Punch" by Weatherman. The 7-piece set retailed for $1.00.

Differences between the two:
Finial of lid appears to have a longer neck on this one.
The finial collar is straight-sided on this one rather than tapered.
There are fewer hobs on this one.

There are remnants of gold paint on the finial of the box pictured.
