Unknown Pegasus Carousel Etch a.k.a. Carousel Pony Etch
Unknown Pegasus Carousel Etch a.k.a. Carousel Pony Etch |
The top example was found on a Paden City bowl. The bottom on a Heisey Empress bowl.
The Domintz book,"The Encyclopedia of Paden City Glass" lists this as a Paden City etch using both names shown above. and shows it on a #412 crystal creamer and sugar.
Sandra Birdwell Walker posted the following comments in our glass forum:"The etching now called Pegasus Carousel was first discussed by Jerry Barnett in early 1979 under a generic description of a ?Paden Pony? etching. For many years after that rumors and speculation on this etching circulated and in 1998 actual examples of what was believed to be this etching were found. Based on the design itself and in an attempt to avoid confusion with the figural called the Paden Pony, the etching was renamed Pegasus Carousel at that time. (we have no idea where the Domitz?s came up with the designation Carousel Pony)
At the time our book was published, we had never seen an example of this etching on a piece other than Paden City, and had not seen any reference to the similar etching shown in the Heisey book ? thereby indicating the possibility that this was a Paden City etching.
At this point, we think the following should be taken into consideration. There are two similar, but not identical etches in question. While one is listed as Lotus in the Heisey book, that does not necessarily make the second one Lotus. Designers, just like glass workers, worked for different glass companies so finding similar etches belonging to different companies is not uncommon."
Due to the many mysteries about this etch, we have elected to post in the unknown category. |
