Phoenix Glass Company History
Phoenix Glass Company, Monaca, Pennsylvania (1880 to the present).

Established in 1880 by Andrew Howard in Phillipsburgh, Pennsylvania (later renamed Monaca), the product of this company has been almost exclusively lighting glassware since the beginning. The exception to this was in the 1930s when sculptured glass was made, initially from molds borrowed from the Consolidated Lamp and Glass Company, which had temporarily closed in response to economic conditions, and later using their own molds. In 1937 they also acquired some molds from the Co-operative Flint Glass Company, reportedly in satisfaction of a debt, which were put into production until 1942.

The Phoenix name proved apt, since the company arose from fire four times, in 1884, 1893, 1964, and 1978. Each time the factory was rebuilt. In 1978, Phoenix was purchased by the Anchor Hocking Corporation. It is now owned by NewellRubbermaid and is still operated as part of the Anchor Hocking Specialty Glass Company.

Editor's note: While they started with lantern chimneys and continued to be important in the lighting industry, in the 1880s and 1890s much of Phoenix's production was cut glass, particulary colored and cased glass. Phoenix holds the patent for mother-of-pearl glass.
