Fostoria Vintage and Morgantown Bernadette Etch Comparison
The Fostoria etch is on the left and the Morgantown on the right. The pattern itself is close to identical.
The camera has exaggerated the differences in tumbler size! The one on the left is Fostoria #820-1/2 (heavy bottomed) and the right is Morgantown #9415 Topeka. Larry Baker thinks the difference is primarily in the acid used to etch the glass! On MOST (I did not say all!!) Morgantown etched glass from before the mid-1920's, the etching is uniformly deep and results in an unusually white etching. It has a distinct feel. Think of American Beauty. Even where the etching plate is worn, or when bits are missing; the rest of the design is surprisingly uniform -- almost 2 dimensional rather than 3. Fostoria's uneven etching gives a more 3 dimensional effect. The early Fostoria etchings are especially prone to having missing bits.
