A crow ("A-Kro') within the letter A is the symbol of the Akro Agate Company, started in 1911 in a shoe store in Akron, Ohio before movong to Clarksburg, WV in 1914. Akro first made toy marbles and caster balls but later began production lines of glass flower pots, ash trays, and several lines of children's dishes.

At the beginning of World War II, when cheap Japanes imports were cut off, Akro's glass dishes enjoyed huge popularity which continued through the war years until 1948 when cheap plastics and metal dishes became cheaper to produce. Akro closed their doors in 1949.
