Wheeling Decorating Company (WDCO) also did a griffin etch . It was numbered D204 and was significantly different enough to get around patent rights that may have still been held by Joseph O. Balda. It's possible that in the final analysis Wheeling decided not to use their design because actual examples of it on glass have not been found.
"There are a number of significant differences if you will compare them very closely. "The most prominent is the tails. WDCO are skinny and curl up with a tuft at the end. Central are shaggy and lay flat."Griffin heads are different, WDCO look straight forward at each other and Central look upwards with long tongues extended as if howling."There are major differences in those circular rigarees under the Griffins. The WDCO ones have a star shape in them."Central Griffin wings appear much longer than WDCO and appear to go up at about a 60 degree angle. WDCO go up at about 45 degrees."WDCO griffins look more like dogs with short hair while Central's look more like lions with shaggy hair."Central griffins are sitting right down on their haunches, but WDCO are not. Their rear legs are about half extended."Also there are some small differences in the rigaree between the griffins." (This analysis was provided by Roger Trudeau)
