Tuthill Company History
"Among the finest pieces of American cut glass ever produced were the products of the Tuthill Cut Glass Company of Middletown, New York" -Albert Christian Revi, American Cut and Engraved Glass

Charles Guernsey Tuthill got his start in Corning, NY, where in 1895 he opened a cutting shop in his father's house. In 1900 he moved to Middletown, NY and opened the Tuthill Cut Glass Co., which operated until 1923. In about 1902, C. G. Tuthill's brother, James, and his sister-in-law Susan joined the company. Susan Tuthill acted as manager and was a real stickler for quality control. Charles Tuthill was a very talented designer and cutter, and was the artist behind most of the company's patterns. James Tuthill was responsible for the excellent photography used their catalogs.

It was a small shop, only 12-15 men and women. During its relatively short period of operation Tuthill produced a full line of rich cut glass, including bottles, inkwells, lighting fixtures, and boxes, as well as bowls, vases and the like. By 1911 Tuthill was also producing exceptional quality stone and copper-wheel engraved items, usually depicting highly realistic flowers, leaves and fruit. On many pieces, the fruit and floral motifs were combined with cut glass patterns. Some of their blanks came from Dorflinger and Pairpoint, the rest are unknown. After 1915 every article was acid etched with the script Tuthill trademark.
