Company History
Apollo Studios New York was a division of Bernard Rice & Sons. In 1872, the Apollo Silver Co. was involved in a bankruptcy merger with the Redfield & Rice Co. resulting in formation of the Bernard Rice & Sons Co. Some items are marked only with Apollo, sometimes with Apollo Studios NY or Apollo Ovington (the prestigious 5th Avenue NYC gift shop), while other Apollo pieces known to have been marketed by Bernard Rice & Sons are unmarked.

Bernard Rice's & Sons continued in business until 1958. Apollo Studios produced items using metalwork comprising silverplate, goldplate, copper, gilded brass, etc. In some cases, handpainted portraits on ivory or jewel ivory combinations were put on items. Apollo Studios was mentioned in magazine advertisements as manufacturers of hollow ware, boudoir accessories, and gift items, mainly involving the bridal market.

In researching Apollo Studios on the Internet, many results list Apollo Studios in existence from 1909 to 1922, leading to confusion and conflicting information. These statements are inaccurate for the following reasons:

1. Many glass pieces found marked Apollo with ornate metalwork feature glass blanks that were manufactured after 1922. In several cases blanks used were not manufactured until the 1930s.

2. Bernard Rice & Co. magazine advertisements feature Apollo Studio items into the late 1940s.

There is also erroneous information on the internet that Apollo Studio items were only marked prior to 1923 which is inaccurate since (again) many glass blanks used by Apollo for decorating were not even produced prior to 1923 yet are found clearly marked Apollo Studios, NY or just Apollo.
