Urn is 4 " tall by 4 1/4" in diameter.
The painting is shown in a catalog from the 1930s from the Bohemian decorating company, Goldberg. The company used blanks by several glassmakers, and did a wide variety of finishing: staining, painting, enameling, gilding, cutting, engraving, coralene, and mounting of pieces in metal.
This piece is painted with a mounted soldier on one side and an eagle on the other side. The eagle has a banner on it that says: "Suum cuique." This Latin phrase was a motto of Prussia's King Frederick the Great, and is still used by the German military police. It translates, "To each what he deserves."
During World War II, the Nazis used the German translation at the entrance to the Buchenwald concentration camp. The gate reading "Jedem das Seine" remained in use after the war, when the Soviets occupied the camp and utilized it for the imprisonment of the Nazis themselves.
The phrase rendered notorious a Nokia advertising
campaign in Germany in 1998, rousing objections from the American Jewish Committee.
The phrase is still used as a proverb in German-speaking countries, though sometimes evoking negative associations. |
